Our Commitment to Sustainability
At J.R. Freethy Architect, we are dedicated to sustainable building practices and environmental stewardship. Our approach to sustainability is integrated into every phase of our projects, from design to construction, ensuring that we minimize our environmental impact while maximizing resource efficiency.
Sustainable Materials
- Structural Steel: Our structural frames are made from 100% recyclable steel, with over 90% of the material being recycled. This significantly reduces the environmental footprint of our projects.
- Recycled Products: We specify and use products that incorporate recycled content, including carpet tiles that manufacturers will recycle into new product lines after 25 years at no charge to our clients.
Construction Waste Management
We implement comprehensive waste management strategies on all our construction sites:
- Steel Recycling: Excess rebar, steel studs, and other steel products are collected in designated bins. Contractors are incentivized to recycle as they receive payment by weight for the steel, rather than incurring disposal fees.
- Drywall and Gypsum: These materials are collected in separate bins and recycled appropriately.
- Concrete and Glass: Concrete blocks are recycled into aggregates for road construction, while glass is similarly processed.
- Aluminum: Salvaged at transfer depots, ensuring that it does not go to waste.
- Electrical Cabling: Electricians strip copper from cables, which is then recycled for profit during slower work periods.
- Wood Waste: Collected wood is sent to the Ajax steam plant, where it is either burned to produce energy or chipped into mulch.
Environmental and Legal Compliance
We ensure all our projects comply with Ontario’s environmental laws. Our clients can review our sustainability practices on our website to confirm compliance and understand our commitment to eco-friendly building practices.
Innovative Recycling Programs
- Carpet Recycling: We work with carpet tile manufacturers that have take-back programs to recycle old carpet tiles into new products, promoting a circular economy and reducing landfill waste.
At J.R. Freethy Architect, our goal is to create buildings that are not only functional and aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally responsible. We continually seek new ways to enhance our sustainability efforts, ensuring that our projects contribute positively to the environment and the communities we serve.
